About
Variolytics GmbH is a Stuttgart-based company that develops measurement technology, software and AI-based process optimization to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at wastewater treatment plants. It was founded in 2020 as a spin-off from the Fraunhofer Institute by Matthias Stier, Johann Barlach and Steffen Görner.
The company's EmiCo systems measure nitrous oxide (N2O), methane, CO2 and oxygen in the off-gas of aeration tanks in real time. The product line includes EmiCo lite, a compact plug-and-play unit; EmiCo Insight, a platform for dashboards, climate balances and automated emissions reports; EmiCo Gateway, an encrypted IoT data hub; and Vario two, a patented system for simultaneous gas and liquid phase analysis aimed at research and industry. Its customers include wastewater operators in Germany and Denmark, with published case studies covering nitrification and denitrification problems and aeration energy savings.
The company has received recognition including second place in the Umwelttechnikpreis Baden-Württemberg 2023, a VR-INNOVATIONs Award 2025 in the smallest enterprise category, and a win in the climate category of the Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis for EmiCo lite. A seed round was closed in December 2022 led by High-Tech Gründerfonds with Fraunhofer Technology Transfer Fonds and angel investors. In January 2025 a growth financing round was led by Nordic Alpha Partners, with participation from the European Innovation Council, High-Tech Gründerfonds and Fraunhofer Technology Transfer Fonds. Variolytics also formed a strategic alliance with the water solutions provider Glanua in June 2024.
