About

Vexlum is a Tampere-based manufacturer of high-power, low-noise, narrow-linewidth semiconductor lasers based on its proprietary Vertical-External-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VECSEL) technology. The company was spun out of the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at Tampere University in 2017, building on more than a decade of VECSEL research. Its vertically integrated process starts with molecular beam epitaxy growth of III-V semiconductor wafers, which are processed into laser chips in its own cleanroom facilities and then integrated into complete laser systems.

Vexlum's products address the limited availability of compact, cost-effective, high-power lasers at precise wavelengths. Its customers and target applications include quantum computers, trapped-ion systems, optical atomic clocks, semiconductor metrology, satellite optical communications and space. Recent product and partnership activity includes the VXL laser system launched in January 2026, a partnership with OXIDE Corporation on high-power deep UV lasers, a collaboration with Menlo Systems on a modular photonics source for optical clocks, and a yellow guide star laser being developed for the European Space Agency.

In February 2026 Vexlum announced EUR 10 million in combined equity, grant and debt financing to move from boutique production to industrial-scale manufacturing in Tampere. The company has a US subsidiary in Colorado, a distributor in France, and in 2026 established a UK R&D operation in London.
