About
Vidar Systems is a Kyiv-based acoustic intelligence company founded in 2023, growing out of a volunteer effort to provide passive counter-battery reconnaissance for Ukrainian forces. Its flagship product, the Acoustic Weapon Locating System (AWLS), uses a network of distributed, low-cost acoustic sensors combined with AI and machine learning to detect and locate direct and indirect gunfire, including howitzers, mortars, tanks, grenade launchers and machine guns. Because the sensors emit nothing, they are harder to detect and strike than radar-based counter-battery systems. Pre-production units have reportedly been used in active combat since 2024, and the company is reported to be building largely from commercial off-the-shelf components.
The company says it is developing next-generation autonomous products and an expansion into C-UAS reconnaissance, and it showed a prototype of a new product at DALO Industry Days in Denmark in 2026. Its website also presents the same edge-AI acoustic sensing for civilian uses, including detecting illegal logging through chainsaw and truck signatures and monitoring wildlife through species vocalizations.
Vidar Systems is reported to have a team of more than 30 experts across Europe, with a presence in Czechia. Its recognitions include second place in the defence track of the IT Arena startup competition in 2024, a Forbes recognition in 2025, and a place in the Creative Destruction Lab Estonia 2025/26 cohort. Its technology has been featured in Ukrainian defence media and presented at Brave1 events.
