About
Wild Bioscience, also known as Wild Bio, is an Oxford University spinout that develops improved crop varieties using AI, evolutionary biology and precision breeding. The company was spun out of the University of Oxford in 2021 by Dr Ross Hendron and Prof Steve Kelly to move their plant research from the lab onto the farm. Its platform analyses plant evolution across hundreds of millions of years to identify beneficial genetic traits in wild species, which are then used to guide breeding and gene editing in modern elite crop varieties. The company has reported double-digit improvements in yield components, drought resilience and enhanced carbon sequestration into soils, and has field trials in the UK, Brazil, Argentina and the United States.
In October 2025 Wild Bio raised a $60M Series A led by the Ellison Institute of Technology, with participation from Oxford Science Enterprises, Braavos Capital and the University of Oxford. The round was used to expand research and development and commercial operations. In April 2026 the company expanded its Milton Park site to 16,000 sq ft, including a CL2 gene-editing laboratory and a crop design and engineering centre focused on precision-bred wheat, and appointed Lisa Flashner of EIT as a non-executive director and Dr Stuart Harrison as chief business officer.
Wild Bio has pursued partnerships to extend its platform. In 2025 it joined a six million pound ARIA-funded strategic partnership with the University of Oxford. In February 2026 it licensed Pairwise's Fulcrum genome editing tools, in January 2026 it announced a collaboration with The Traits Company on AI-driven soybean trait design, and in September 2026 it announced a collaboration with Oracle on AI-powered crop resilience and crop-based carbon removal. In July 2026 Wild Bio acquired F1 Seed, a Suffolk-based independent wheat breeding business, to become an integrated UK seed company.
